Like Leaning on a Rotten Stump | Ajahn Anan | 23 Dec 2021

    Ajahn Anan Dhamma
    Jan 3, 2022

Relying on our bodies is like leaning on a rotten stump - it breaks and we fall. We have seen people die from this world; what do they take with them when they go? May you set your hearts on training the mind.

Doing Good, Deepening Compassion, Welcoming the New Year | Friday Dhamma | 12 Dec 2025

    Ajahn Anan Dhamma
    Dec 12, 2025

"Doing Good, Deepening Compassion, Welcoming the New Year" - a Dhamma talk by Tan Ajahn Anan, translated from Thai to English, given on 12 Dec 2025
Luang Por Anan emphasised the importance of living with heedfulness, using our time beneficially, and consistently cultivating wholesome qualities. One key practice highlighted was metta bhavana, the cultivation of loving-kindness. This practice leads to inner peace, protection from harm, being loved by both humans and devas, and even the attainment of higher Dhamma realisations. The Dhamma talk also pointed out the profound virtues of one’s parents, who are regarded as Brahma or arahants from the perspective of their children because of their boundless kindness and compassion. Luang Por reminded everyone of life’s impermanence and the Eight Worldly Conditions, which all beings inevitably encounter. He stressed that gaining wealth, status, or any form of happiness requires true diligence, effort, and the creation of wholesome kamma — not merely wishing for it.

    A Closed Hand, A Closed Heart | Friday Dhamma | 19 Dec 2025

    Ajahn Anan Dhamma
    Dec 19, 2025

"A Closed Hand, A Closed Heart" - a Dhamma talk by Tan Ajahn Anan, translated from Thai to English, given on 19 Dec 2025
Luang Por Anan spoke about the harmful consequences of stinginess according to Buddhist teachings. He emphasised that giving (dāna) is a direct antidote to stinginess and a means of cultivating a joyful, open, and compassionate mind.
Stinginess can manifest in many forms, such as clinging to one’s wealth, living space, or even one’s own knowledge and virtues. When a person does not practise generosity, it leads to suffering both in this life and in future lives, including rebirth as a hungry ghost guarding wealth or as a person living in poverty.
Luang Por further advised that Buddhists should cultivate the perfection of generosity (dāna pāramī) according to their means, without causing hardship to themselves or their families. This allows one to accumulate merit as provisions for the journey through saṃsāra, while also purifying defilements rooted in ignorance and greed — ultimately leading toward liberation.
